When Does One Piece Gets Good? – A Guide

One Piece is one of the most acclaimed series ever and is also the best-selling Manga of all time. It is about Luffy and his journey to becoming the Pirate King. Currently, it has over 1000 chapters and 1000 episodes and it might be a daunting task to start it this late especially since the first few episodes might be hard to get into.

One Piece is really rated high and the manga is at 2nd position in the best manga list in Myanimelist. The talk about the series is overwhelmingly positive from the fans. But the biggest issue that few have is that the starting episodes or chapters are slow or boring.

When Does One Piece Gets Good?

One Piece starts to get good in the Baratie arc in episode 24 or chapter 51 when Zoro fights Mihawk. That chapter shows a glimpse of the greatness of One Piece. But Arlong Park arc should be the first arc that truly shows what One Piece is about. The dynamics between Strawhats, emotional moments, hype moments, villains, etc in the Arlong Park arc are amazing.

Is The Start Slow?

The entire first 100 chapters are just the prologue and it is just expected that the real high-stakes dramatic story doesn’t start immediately. One Piece is always supposed to be a long-term story and hence the initial arcs had to take themselves slowly to establish the world-building and powerhouses of the world.

Having said that I think the Orange Town arc, and Syrup village arc are two of the least interesting arcs and they actually occupy two positions in the bottom three places in our list of Best One Piece arcs. The things like fights, world-building, good villains, and the emotional moments which One Piece is known for aren’t at their best in those two arcs. I would suggest the new readers be patient for the first few arcs and give it a chance till Arlong Park. One Piece has some of the greatest arcs the medium has to provide and it is worthwhile to continue reading it even if you feel the initial episodes aren’t fast-paced.

For me, it wasn’t that big of an issue and I quite enjoyed the initial arcs too. There are things from those arcs that are still relevant to the plot even after 1000 chapters.

Series Only Gets Better

The Series gets great from Arlong Park and only gets better. There are serious plotlines, themes, nuanced villains, dark moments, and amazing character moments going forward. World Building, lore, mysteries, and politics in One Piece are some of the greatest in the medium and those things are barely touched upon in the prologue.

One Piece – Alabasta to Skypiea Saga Is An Amazing Read

After the prologue, the series has two Sagas Alabasta and Skypiea Saga that has several mini-arcs within them. Alabasta and Skypiea are both ranked in Top 10 in our list of best One Piece arcs that should give you an insight into the greatness of these sagas. While Arlong Park arc is great, Alabasta is an embodiment of Peak One Piece. Skypiea is another arc that has great thematic messaging and insane lore and world-building. By this point, We get to know the characters better and also know what to expect. We also would have gotten used to the whimsical nature of the series.

One Piece From Water 7 To Marineford is Peak Storytelling

Water 7 Saga and Marineford Saga are some of the greatest arcs in the Manga medium itself. Emotional moments, Strawhat dynamics, amazing villains, lore, mysteries, hype moments, world-building, etc in these arcs from One Piece are some of the greatest storytelling the medium has provided.

To put into context, Enies Lobby Saga is ranked 10th in our list of the greatest Manga arcs of all time while Marineford Saga is ranked 2nd in the same list. One Piece is something that everyone should experience as it has some of the greatest things the medium has to provide. It might seem like a stereotypical shonen but it is Shonen perfected.
