7 Reasons Why Black Clover Is Hated
When it comes to the popularity of an anime there are multiple factors affecting its popularity. Black Clover manga started back in 2015 and the production of anime started in October of 2017. The manga sold 2.03 million copies between November 2017 to May 2018.
Many fans still think that this anime/manga deserves more respect and many believe that it is on par with the “Big Three” of the manga/anime industry i.e. One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Naruto in terms of the story plot. Here in this article, we have tried to figure out some key points which act as a hindrance, to making this anime more popular.
1. Overly saturated Shonen market
One of the main reasons why this show is underrated is the fact that the industry is overflowing with Shonen manga right now, and it is really difficult to stand out. As a new entrant, you have to compete with the well-established manga series, most Shonen anime/manga have a very loyal fan base for example “One Piece” and “Dragon Ball series” and they are reluctant to try out new series.
But once people try reading/watching Black Clover, rarely, they don’t like the black clover series because it has a nice story and a very decent character development, and side characters are given importance as well.
2. No emotional attachment right from the start
This manga failed to establish the emotional bond/attachment between Asta (the main protagonist) and the readers. For example in the first episode of “Attack on Titan”, Eren’s mother was eaten alive in front of Eren that developed the emotional bond between Eren and readers.
In “Naruto” we see that Naruto is an outcast in the village and people treat him badly and his orphan life melt many fan’s hearts and this develops an emotional attachment which causes fans to stick to the series even longer.
3. Main Protagonist not being a fan-favorite character
Asta is a cheerful and hyperactive character and many people like him and admires his never give up attitude. He fights to protect his loved ones without caring about the consequences.
But when it comes to fan-favorite characters it is easily captain of Black Bull Squad Yami Sukehiro and Wizard King Julius because of their badass character and overpowered abilities, there are not many successful anime in which the main protagonist is this much overshadowed by supporting characters.
4. Lesser screen time for one of the most fan-favorite characters
As mentioned earlier that Asta is not the most fan-favorite character and characters like Yami and Wizard king Julius are given very less screen time at the start. Yes, it is understandable because anime has to focus on the main protagonist more but fans want more action by wizard king whether it is in form of some back story or him fighting other strong villains.
And later after the Elf Resurrection arc when the Wizard king losses his power a lot of fans didn’t like that, because they didn’t get to see a lot of action by the strongest mage of the Clover Kingdom. Even though there are a lot of action scenes that involve Yami as the manga progress his being involved in the action at an earlier stage would have made a very significant impact.
5. Animation is not Top-Quality during action scenes
I understand they try their hardest to perfectly capture the image of Black Clover, but certain angles make characters look blocky and jagged. They may just be underfunded and have a lack of resources, as reported the main animation team is understaffed, so they have to frequently make use of outsourcing with other studios that may or may not be substandard. Not to mention, the anime industry is a very hard place to work in, they have impossible deadlines and unreasonable workloads.
6. Black clover gives Naruto vibes
Many fans think that black clover gives Naruto vibes and both shows are similar and this is one of the main reasons why this show receives so much hate from Naruto fans,
- Naruto wants to be Hokage, Asta wants to be the Magic Emperor.
- Sasuke is Naruto’s rival and was more skilled at a young age, Yuno is Asta’s rival, and was more skilled at a young age.
- Naruto is loud, weird, and not the most popular kid, Asta is loud, weird, and not the most popular kid.
- Sasuke is chill, and quiet and everyone wants to be like him, Yuno is chill, and quiet and everyone wants to be like him.
- Naruto has a rare, strong, hidden power in him (Kurama), and Asta has a rare, strong, hidden power in him (5 Leaf Devil Grimoire)
- Protoganist are initially weak. (Asta has zero magic power while Naruto was pathetic at his jutsus)
- They both are orphans
- Both are hard-headed and morally good (they both prefer doing the right things)
- Both grow insanely powerful at an unbelievable pace (asta learns anti-magic abilities and Naruto starts using the nine tails power more often).
7. Lack of Deaths
I don’t think that death, as a whole, is something extremely needed. The issue is that the story creates tension and drama by telling us that the villains are terrible and that this battle will be complete madness, but we never see something to feel that way. I don’t like death bait just to create tension. If death is brought to the story as something possible or a consequence of someone’s action (like Gaja’s final spell), just do it.
While healing magic is always a factor, this is still a war. Someone like Mimosa can’t be in two places at a time, so somewhere people won’t receive her healing spells. And that’s reasonable.
Also, death can be a nice tool to develop characters or to give them real reasons to fight. Yuno’s main motivation now is to avenge his squad. But I don’t feel anything about that because most of the people that died weren’t relevant to the story or the characters personally. That’s why Klaus would have been an incredible character to kill. When he almost died, I was pretty shocked. He is a character we know for ages, has a real bond with Yuno, and, with more pages, he could have been something well constructed. I don’t dislike that he is not dead just because William had an incredible moment saving his comrades even after being knocked out.
But it is still a fact that is holding black clover back, in the real world not everything goes as planned and hard times create strong men.
