The order of the ranking is from good to best. Ranking is purely subjective and it is based on my own conclusion. IMDB ratings have been added just to show the general perspective of the series and it has nothing to do with this ranking.

In the year 2022, virtual reality has progressed by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is launched. With the aid of “NerveGear” technology, players can control their avatars within the game using nothing but their own thoughts. Though the characterization are average, the animation and music are brilliant and the story is interesting enough to make it a enjoyable watch.

21. Tokyo Ghoul
IMDB Rating – 7.9
A Tokyo college student is attacked by a ghoul, a superpowered human who feeds on human flesh. He survives, but has become part ghoul and becomes a fugitive on the run. A beautifully written show with an unique plot line that questions the concept of ”survival of the fittest” and portrays the war between two species to become the dominant race. Though it didn’t match up to the manga version of the series, with amazing soundtracks and beautiful animation it is worth watchable.

20. Seven Deadly sins
IMDB Rating – 8.1
The story follows the adventures of Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, and her search for the Seven Deadly Sins. With their help, she endeavors to not only take back her kingdom from the Holy Knights, but to also seek justice in an unjust world. The series has good animation, good scenery and the characters are well done, though they’re not anything groundbreaking for animes in general. Seven Deadly Sins is a solid watch you should probably check out whenever you like.

The story follows the adventures of Natsu, a member of the popular wizard guild Fairy Tail, as he searches the fictional world of Earth-land for the dragon Igneel. The series has good comedy, drama, action, romance and baring few problems with continuity within the story, and the excessive amount of fillers it is a enjoyable watch.

18. Bleach

The story follows the adventures of Ichigo after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper. His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. Referred as one if the “Big Three” alongside Naruto and Onepiece. The story is engaging and runs at a good pace though it has few flaws in its characterisation and random power levels.

17. Psycho Pass

Believing in humanity and order, policewoman Akane Tsunemori obeys the ruling, computerized, precognitive Sibyl System but when she faces a criminal mastermind who can elude this “perfect” system, she questions both Sibyl and herself. The dark, mysterious, and serious atmosphere and its handling of freewill and whether or not a person can be judged before they commit a crime were magnificent. One of the best mystery series available in Netflix.

16. Neon Genesis Evengelion
IMDB Rating – 8.5
It is about a reluctant young man who joins a small squad of pilots under the command of his cold and dictatorial father to drive back the violent monsters using giant machines that seem to have minds of their own. The story evolves into a shocking and powerful psychological drama full of conspiracy, dysfunctional characters, and some of the most harrowingly emotional and painful fight scenes ever. Do watch the two films The End of Evengelion and Evangelion Death (True) which are available in Netflix India along with it.

15. My Hero Academia

The story follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without superpowers (called Quirks) in a world where they have become commonplace, but who still dreams of becoming a hero himself. One of the most famous modern day anime with its popularity continuously on the raise all over the world. It is one of the best superhero series one could find in Netflix India. The story is interesting filled with emotions, humour and good action but the characters may seem bit generic. Still the pacing of the story and plot is really good to make it a really an enjoyable series to binge.

14. Fullmetal Alchemist
IMDB Rating – 8.5
It tells the story about Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse who set on a journey hoping to restore their bodies, which were lost when they attempted to resurrect their deceased mother using alchemy. Not to be confused with Full Metal alchemist Brotherhood which is higher up the list as it is neither a sequel nor a prequel. Both series have similarities in the plot initially but later deviates greatly. Though Fullmetal Alchemist deviates from the manga after few episodes, it is still one of the best thrillers made in anime and it deals heavily with religion, war and science.

13. Mob Psycho 100
IMDB Rating – 8.5
The story is about a psychic middle school boy who tries to live a normal life and keep his growing powers under control, even though he constantly gets into trouble. The story is goofy and silly but at the same time compelling and serious at the same time. The main character despite having super powers is really relatable and his development throughout the episodes is really noticeable and enjoyable.

12. Steins;Gate
IMDB Rating – 8.8
It is set in 2010, and follows Rintaro Okabe, who together with his friends accidentally discovers a method of time travel through which they can send text messages to the past, thereby changing the present. It has an unbelievably strong character development and an amazing plot structure. This is one of those animes that you could easily re-watch the early episodes and every time you do you will end up connecting more dots.

11. Jojo Bizarre Adventures
IMDB Rating – 8.4
Tells the story of the Joestar family, who are possessed with intense psychic strength, and the adventures each member encounters throughout their lives. One of the most unique things about the series is it has different story with different protagonist for each arc while still having a lore and continuity. JoJo is one of the weirdest and most entertaining animes out there, and “Bizarre” is the most apt title for this masterpiece.

10. Demon Slayer
IMDB Rating – 8.8
Set during the Taisho Period (1912-1926), the series follows Tanjiro Kamado who seeks a way to cure his sister Nezuko who was turned into a demon. The show contains stunning animation paired with brutal action and also filled with humor. The characterisation of humans and demons are interesting to watch and well written. One season have been aired till date but with manga completed already, we may expect final seasons pretty soon.

9. Code Geass – Lelouch of the Rebellion.

The series follows the exiled prince Lelouch, who obtains the “power of absolute obedience” from a mysterious woman named C.C. Using this supernatural power, known as Geass, he leads a rebellion against the rule of the Holy Britannian Empire, commanding a series of mecha battles. Though series is full of action, fighting, murder and mecha the core of the series lies in ’emotions’. It has few similarities with Death Note in its narrative style and the story progresses in a rapid pace to keep you engaged till the end.

8. Gintama
IMDB Rating – 8.6
Set in Edo which has been conquered by aliens named Amanto, the plot follows life from the point of view of samurai Gintoki, who works as a freelancer alongside his friends Shimura and Kagura in order to pay the monthly rent. This anime is completely insane and is full of random hilarity and antics, while still maintaining a engaging storyline. Even the fillers are enjoyable. Gintama is undoubtedly one of the best comedy anime ever made. It will be worth every minute you spend on watching it in Netflix India.

7. Naruto (Part 1)

Naruto might be the second most popular anime in the world just behind Dragon ball. The term ninja is synonymous with Naruto. It tells the stories of Naruto Uzumaki who dreams of becoming the Hokage, Sasuke Uchiha who wants to take revenge on his brother and Kakashi Hatake who guides them as their teacher. Naruto is filled with adventures, action and has a wonderful world building and amazing set of wide range of characters.
Naruto Part 1 which is available in Netflix India tells the story about Naruto in his pre-teen years. Unfortunately part 2 ‘Naruto Shippuden’ isn’t available in Netflix yet and it will be disappointing as a viewer to leave the show abruptly. In total 220 episodes of Naruto were aired with a total of 90 reported filler episodes, Naruto has a high filler percentage of 41%. Note: At the time of writing this article (June 12, 2020) Yu Yu Hakuso isn’t available on Netflix India but is scheduled to be released on June 26 2020.
YuYuHakuso is the story about a teenage boy Yusuke Urameshi who becomes ‘Spirit detective’ dealing with cases relating to demons and apparitions. Even though it aired in 1992 to 1995, the story and animation still looks fresh. It is an action packed series filled with humor making it a fulfilling series to watch. It is one of the best adventure animes ever made.

5. Onepunch Man

It tells the story of Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch but seeks to find a worthy foe after growing bored by a lack of challenge due to his overwhelming strength. Onepunch man is a spoof of the whole shounen genre. The story is well written with heavy humor content but the jokes never seemed forced or out of place. The spoof part in Onepunch Man isn’t a cheap mockery of famous series unlike common parody series. Rather the humour flows along with the story tackling whole shounen cliches with intelligent story writing.

4. Haikyuu

Haikyuu follows Shōyō Hinata, a high schooler determined to become a great volleyball player despite his small stature and his team Karasuno High school Volleyball club, which aspires to become the best team in the country. Haikyuu is a fun filled feel good anime and a series you never get bored watching. It delves deep into volleyball and stays true to the sports genre by exploring the nuances of the game at great length in a interesting way. Packed with brilliant animation, amazing characters and great plotline, Haikyuu is a must watch for every anime fan. The biggest strength of the show is that the story has no typical heroes versus villains troupe. All the characters are very likeable and you won’t feel animosity towards any character.

The story follows Light Yagami who stumbles across the “Death Note”,which grants the user the ability to kill anyone whose name is written in its pages and L, a detective tasked with finding the person behind the mysterious deaths. It is an edge of the seat thriller filled with mind games between the two main characters. It is often considered to be the best mystery anime ever made. Death Note is the best gateway anime for any new comer to watch.

2. Hunter X Hunter

Hunter X Hunter tells the story about a kid named Gon who sets on a journey to become a hunter and also to find his father who left at his young age. Unlike what the title poster may suggest, HxH isn’t a feel good story about teens but rather it has a darker tone to its story than most shounen anime. It is often considered to be one of the best animes ever made. It has an amazing world building, an gripping plot and compelling characters. Personally Hunter X Hunter has the best fight sequences in anime and also the best ‘power level‘ design out of all shounen animes. Undoubtedly, A must watch for anyone .

Personally Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood is my favorite TV show of all time, including not just anime. It is a story about Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse who set on a journey hoping to restore their bodies, which were lost when they attempted to resurrect their deceased mother using alchemy. The plot goes in a very fast pace always filled with mystery and suspense. The characters are perfectly executed and every character leaves a deep impact in viewers. FMAB is very ambitious in its storytelling and became successful at executing it too. It touches upon various themes such as friendship, philosophy, religion, war and politics, and the story overall has a dark undertone to it. In one word, a masterpiece and it is the best anime available in Netflix India.
