One Piece Future Strawhats: 5 Best Candidates To Become The Next Strawhat
As of writing this, there are 9 members in the Strawhats crew with Luffy as their captain. As the series progresses we are bound to get more members to the crew. Based on the evidence, I have put together 5 characters that I believe have a chance of joining the crew in terms of likelihood. There are characters that have no chance of joining like Marco, Law, Caribou, Ceaser, Katakuri, etc.
Here are the candidates for joining the crew based on the likelihood.
5. Vivi
Vivi is already an Honorary Strawhat. But she couldn’t leave Alabasta as she is their Queen.
If we were talking about Vivi joining as a Strawhat before the Reverie arc, I would have said it wasn’t possible. But recent developments in the Reverie suggest that something might have happened to her or Alabasta.
In Reverie, Imu held Vivi’s photo alongside the likes of Luffy, Blackbeard, and Shirahoshi and in the Wano arc Act 2 intermission, we found out that something critical happened related to Vivi. It seems she might be on the run or in some bad situation. We still need more info and her potential Strawhat position depends on future developments with regard to Reverie incidents.
4. Carrot
Carrot is a Mink that is traveling with the Strawhats From Zou arc. She was with the Strawhats during the Whole Cake Island and has carried along with them in the Wano arc too.
Carrot’s future is tricky to judge. Her character was very dynamic in Whole Cake Island. She had good chemistry with Chopper, Luffy, and Nami. Pedro’s death greatly impacted her and she inherited his will. Later she ended the arc by turning into Sulong form. Everything was set up perfectly for her to join as a Strawhat.
But the problem is her character is that she is very stagnant in the Wano arc. She has no real story for her. The only character moment she had was when she attacked Perespero. Based on the Wano arc, it doesn’t seem like she is being pushed towards being a Strawhat. There is no character arc written for her during Wano.
So, it is tough to decide. Maybe Oda decided that Whole Cake Arc moments and Pedro’s are just enough for her induction. I personally think she needs to have a bit more spotlight in Wano to organically get into the crew.
3. Otama
Otama is an eight-year-old kid in Wano who befriended Luffy. Otama already is a friend of Ace and was promised to be taken in Ace’s ship when she becomes a Kunoichi.
Otama has been an integral part of the Wano arc and even helped massively in the raid. She has a great dynamic with Luffy, Nami, and Usopp.
I think since Ace promised her to let in the ship, there is a good chance that Luffy fulfills the promise. She is actively taking part in a raid becoming an actual Kunoichi as she promised Ace.
But I feel the age of Otama and strength of her may be an issue since Oda has to assign a character to protect her in fights which may be tiresome.
2. Yamato
Yamato is probably the most obvious case as of now. Just in her introduction, she says that Luffy has to take her on his ship. She has repeatedly said multiple times that she wants to travel the seas. She is obsessed with Oden’s adventures and wants to be free like him. So if we take this at face value, she seems the most likely candidate as of now. But there are some subtle things Oda does that to me doubt that she will actually join.
Here my theory on this:
Yamato’s character arc is clearly set up to finally throw off Oden’s persona and be herself. She isn’t fully understanding about Oden and his flaws. Oden’s biggest flaw is leaving the country even when he knew it had a problem. Yamato is only seeing Oden’s positives and doesn’t fully understand Oden’s biggest mistake.
Also, her devil fruit is revealed to be Guardian Deity of Wano which pretty much convinces me that she isn’t leaving Wano. But I won’t deny the obvious thing that has been said many times.
1. Momonosuke
Momonosuke is the son of Oden and wants to be the Shogun of Wano. Momonosuke joining the Strawhats seems likely the least likely option. His whole arc has been built up to take down Kaido and lead Wano as Shogun. So I am obviously taking a great leap of faith in putting him as the most likely candidate.
Here is my theory on this:
First of all, Momonosuke is someone who is necessary to bring Dawn to the world based on the content in Oden’s Journal. It seems he will have an active role in bringing Dawn to the world and the best place for that is to with the Strawhats.
Also, Momonosuke is just an eight-year-old. Oda doesn’t write a king of the country to be like that. Look at the kings of the countries Strawhats saved – Drum, Alabasata, Dressrosa, Skypiea, etc. They are written to be mature and wise and Momo isn’t like that.
Momo could become like them in the future but at the moment, he cannot. He doesn’t have the intelligence and is too dependent on others. This arc is written to show his growth in leadership. His great moments in his leadership are appreciated because he is young.
There is a certain amount of unfairness put on Momo just because he is the son of Oden. Adding the Shogun title to that is just too much for him.
